H makes oil

I have a 45 farmall h and there's always to much oil in it. I've had problems in the past with the float sticking and filling the engine up with gas. I don't think this is the case, cause the oil doesn't smell like gas and I now turn the gas off every time I'm done. It has live hydraulics and I'm always adding hydraulic fluid. Is it possible I'm getting hydraulic fluid in there.

Yes, that more than likely is what`s happening. You probably have a seal out on your pump and the hydraulic fluid is getting pushed into your crankcase.

Yes. The seal on the pump is leaking into the engine. Pretty easy fix. Two seals are used (depending on pump type) one is plane lip seal, the other is an O ring. If the shaft is grooved, the seal should be placed to not run in the groove. If Oring the use of a speedy sleeve and minor machining of groove in housing is needed. Jim

The H is an updraft carb, how can the float stick and fill the engine up with gas.

Does it go through the governor tube?

Thanks for the help. Are the seals easy to get, can I go to an IH dealer for them? As for the gas I don't understand it either but the oil stunk of gas bad.

Thanks,
Jeff

A full gas tank and the fuel valve left on, with a leaky needle valve, will fill an engine.
The air intake hose ends above the height of the valves, The manifold fills and drops gasoline in the cylinders. Been there seen it happen. Jim

I would LOVE to see an H engine get gas in the crankcase from a leaky float.

It's not possible.

The carburetor is several inches BELOW the intake ports, and has multiple places for the gas to leak out.

There is no way on this earth that the gas could fill the carburetor, fill the intake manifold, and run into the engine.

Even if it were possible, your engine would be RUINED: The first time you tried to start it, it would suck a pint of straight gasoline into a cylinder, hydrolock, and bend a rod.

Never, I repeat, NEVER say never. Just keep in mind the fuel tank sets higher than the carburetor and governor tube, and if the air intake hose is properly secured to the carburetor, gasoline cannot escape from there.

YES, it is possible for a defective carburetor to fill the engine crankcase with gasoline.

Rule #1... Keep the fuel drain in the air intake (bottom of carb body) unclogged... Otherwise it is possible since fluids seek their own level...

Oh yes, they will fill them with gas.
But if it does you will have gas in more places than just crankcase unless it has set long enough for gas to drip out of carburetor and air cleaner intake pipe.
