350 T/A pressure plate

It appears that the reason the T/A is nonfunctional is that the T/A pressure plate never lifts off the clutch disk. On closer inspection, the pressure plate cover is always tight against the raised bosses ( where the three compression bolts thread in ) on the pressure plate friction disk. In other words the pressure plate springs are already compressed without the throwout bearing touching the fingers.

Does anyone know the correct distance between the face of the lifting fingers and the friction surface, with the T/A pressure plate installed ?

Thanks

Greg

If you put in a working T/A pressure plate, How much thread shows on the back side of the jam nut for the rod that comes from the T/A lever ? How much do you have to move the lever before you feel the throwout bearing hit the pressure plate fingers ?

Thanks

When I adjusted my TA pressure plate:
1. TA lever linkage exteral properly adjusted.
2. TA lever pulled back and latched.
3. Had a 2x4 block holding the clutch pedal all the way down. (Block our tires!)
4. Adjusted the TA pressure plate finger bolts till the pressure plate clears the clutch by .80"-.100" in this position.
5. Lock the adjustment bolts back up.
6. Test tractor.
7. Reinstall cover.

Hope this helps

Thanks Cory,

Did you have the yoke for the T/A lever centered on the threaded portion of the rod or just set it where the by-the-book adjustment proceedure had it ?

On mine the yoke is just a few threads from running out of adjustment.

Sounds like the TA clutch and pressure plate could stand to be replaced.

Is the tractor always in direct or always in TA?

T/A and clutch(es) were just replaced. The tractor is in direct, but the shift lever jams in gear once it warms up.

The problem is that there is no space between the T/A pressure plate cover and the friction plate in the pressure plate assembly, i.e. there in no room for the friction plate to lift. The T/A linkage is disconnected and the throwout bearing is not touching the levers on the pressure plate.

Service manager at our local IH dealer was mystified, but had helpful suggestions for getting the clutch out without removing the T/A..

I'm going to try 1/8" shims between the pressure plate and the flywheel.

I remember running into a problem like this a number years ago. What it turned out to be was the TA clutch disc was in backwards. It was always tight against the pressure plate and if I remember correctly there was a slight gap between the disc and the flywheel. Try slipping a thin feeler gauge in to see if there is a gap. When things are assembled correctly when the tractor is in direct drive the disc is tight and when you pull the TA lever the disc is loose. If the disc is still tight with the lever back in TA your transmission will still be in Direct Drive. I hope this helps.

Greg, I see you have just the inspection cover off, have you pulled the larger cover it attaches to so you can get a good look at the clutch fingers and their adjustments?

I have not pulled the larger top cover. To get it off I need to remove the belt pulley, which is blocked by the hydraulic resevoir, which is under the instruments... The service manager had a work around, cut the top cover in two.

In anycase, I adjusted the levers when I installed the new pressure plate. They were all different heights when it arrived.
