m connecting rods

Ready to put the m back together with the rebuild kit. I know folks use locktight on the main bearing caps instead of the wires. Do you do the same with the rod caps or reuse the bending tabs?

The service manual doesn't mention sealant so I assume the head gasket is dry?

IF i ever run into and engine that i have to work on and found loctite on mains rods or anything i would shoot then castrate the sob .WHAT IDIOT does that . If it had safety wire then it gets safety wire . and as for the head gskt copper coat .

I'd get new bendy-tabs, compared to what you've already spent it isn't going to be much AND if you have to get a new block and start all over 'cause a rod came loose you'd marvel at how cheap they really are.

Do you or anyone know what to use for solavent (sp) for the copper cote? I have part of a can that is getting old & gummy that I hate to throw away if I could thin it somehow.

i don't use anything except the proper torque on the bolts. your car doesn't have lock tabs on the rod bolts. even a slightly newer tractor than your m has nothing holding the rod bolts from falling out except the proper torque on them. the only engine bolts that i can think of that call for locktite is a 706 flywheel and that's only to prevent oil leaking.

I use the locks because we don't know the make up of the bolts. Yes, many new engines do not use a lock, however there are two different types of bolts used on those engines. One style holds it't torque by stretching the neck of the bolt and the other locks by deflection of the head of the bolt. The latter type have the notch's in the head.
