has any one stuffed an alternator under the hood, whats the easyiest or best alternator to use for this application

Lots of those tractors have been converted to 12 volts, with an alternator. The original generator did not set under the hood on those models, so an alternator would not set under the hood either.

Hitachi from 1986 Nissan PU with a Z2.4 engine is fine. The diagram for a 10SI delco works the small L marked terminal is the same as Delco #1 the S terminal is the same as Delco #2. Jim

These are some of the easiest to convert because the generator is down on the side of the engine. Usually you can just bolt the alternator on directly in place of the generator using 3/8" all-thread and some strategically-placed nuts and lock washers.
