806 LP gas experts

I confess that I am knowledgable about MM LP gas engines, but ignorant about IH. There is an 806 Lp for sale locally that kinda caught my attention..I have heard the gasoline engines were not heavy duty enough for this size tractor, but wondering if the LP's were built a little stronger. Thanks for any and all replies. Any idea of the fair price range?

with an 806 the LP and gas engines are the same basic engine with different fuel systems. maybe minor variations like compression ratio, timing, etc but I'm not sure. the engine model is C301

That engine is basically the same as the gasser , The biggest down fall on the C301 is the fact that it has no sleeves and was a true gas hog. As on the gassers they had a bigger carb also other changes were in the advance curve in the dist. They were still the four main bearing engine as to why they had that ingot valve cover i have no idea unless it was for added weight of the tractor . As far as pistons here i do not know as i do not have any old parts books to see if the pistons were any different . LP was suppose to have higher octane but power wise there is not much difference LP burns cleaner . Myself i have not had much experience with it . It was not vary popplier around here.

Had one and worked it a lot and hard. That motor is just not enough for that tractor - period! Then, as others have said, no sleeves made it more difficult and expensive to rebuild. Finding pistons, standard or over, is difficult. Nice show piece or piece of history or even light duty but not for working hard on a regular basis.

That valve cover, yaa, I always thought it was to make it look like a brute under that hood. If you put a regular valve cover on it you can look right through one side and out the other under the hood as the tank etc is a little higher up on the 806. We only sold one LP 806 and it broke the block from over heating.

Ive got an 806LP and the ONLY difference in the engine between it and a gasser are the pistons and valves. higher compression to burn the LP better, and little tougher valves since LP burns hotter too.

I dont try and over do it with the ole girl, but she can hold her own. The big downfall to it as TractorVet pointed out is they are a thirsty critter. However, I fill directly out of a 500 gallon tank and i filled it last summer for 1.69 a gallon, so that sure beats the crap out of a straight gasser!!

Seems like I read that the valve cover was tall to eliminate an open gap at the bottom of the hoodline...Purely cosmetic, avoided appearance of a "little" engine.

I do know LP is 100 octane plus. To get the true power and economy, higher compression is mandatory. Sure it will burn in lower compression just like E-85, but the full potential of the fuel is negated.
