Gotta Pass This On

Bought this ol' 1066 a fews years ago. I just work the livin' 'snot' out of it ever year.

I've got 'er turned up just as far as I dare go to pull this wide-azzed disc of mine.

Anyhoo this past winter sent 'er in to the red shop for a front end rebuild, this and that, but mostly to get rid of that darned "thump" in the intake. Told 'em to adjust the valves.

Jest of the story is what a difference that made!

Totally made a different tractor out of the thing. Gobs more power, stopped that black smoke, no more lugging down and it now runs cooler.

Well worth the price.

I can believe that. I can still remember way back when I was a kid, and the 4010 gasser dad owned was sent in to the JD dealer about every two years for a valve job. I could tell the difference every time. Both by how it sounded, and how it pulled.

Friend of mine with a JD 4640 ran it about 8 years before running the valves on it. Said he didn't realize just how much it had had lost. Does it every 2 or 3 years after that and still using it. Not his #1 tractor now, but still good.

Had the same thing on the SM a few days ago.It was running like crap.New plugs, points,Etc. didn't change a thing.Thought I was hearing a valve 'puff' a little.Checked the valves...wow.They were so tight its a wonder it would still run. After 30 +years it was time for an 'overhead'.Now its no longer the 'same' tractor-doesn't even wiggle the raincap at slow idle. :)
