Short profile muffler

I've attached some pictures of short profile mufflers, were these an optional muffler or just standard cut down? I can see the benefit of not having to remove the muffler to pull into a standard size garage door. Don't know how much smoke you'd get in the face.

my w-9 has the short muffler. i ended up welding an extension on it. working in the wind blows all the exhaust right in your face.

I have one on my Farmall 140 with the Woods belly mower for getting under tree limbs and other things. It's OK but not the sound of an original for sure, and sort of a hollow sound if you know what I mean. I don't seem to have an issue with exhaust or fumes in breathing though. My original style muffler from Mark's Tractor's on the Super C (same engine) sounds like the IH sound of years ago, Hal.

have to find a grove or tobacco muffler. I have one but im not really sure if they are made any more. Like Hal says the smaller ones A-140 etc are still easy to find new, they larger ones are more of a task.

Mine are all 3" shorter to fit in the shed.

Those adds are not always what they built. The one on the "WHITE" tractor is not an I-H He just found one and then made it fit the tractor.

The ones in the ad are as they came. Our 47 H had one. They were changed to the long pipe a "few" years later. We replaced the original one with the longer pipe in the early 50's, not sure of the year when they changed.

Did it have a long or a short body. The 47B had the long body with the long discharge. I remember some older Bs that had the short body and short outlet they were rusty and loud

They do let smoke in your face, especially noticeable with the diesel. The gas, not so much. Still very handy for mowing around trees etc. I keep a shorty in the garage just for moving in an out and short trips, but swap it for a long one if expecting to be in the seat a lot that day and it is breezy.
