I am looking at buying a 766 gas, 4700 hours. Motor has a slight knock, not real loud, but can definately hear it. Is this a concern?

YES, it could be a wrist pin , or it could be that there is piston scoring or she my have a rod heading south. Ant way you look at it it is going to be a overhaul wright off the bat.

Buy it cheap enough to rebuild or walk away. If it was a cheap fix the owner would fix & keep or fix before selling.

is it a knock or a tick? Ticking is a softer sound like snapping your fingers, imho. Ticking could be valve lifters or exhaust leak. Depending on your experience with engines, you may want to bring a mechanic with.

with used tractors, the other posts about what you can afford to lose, etc. hold true

Unless you have an old "short bus" with a DT360 ready to transplant, AND the tractor is cheap, walk away.

I was not going to say that , but it is true . A close friend bought a 766 gasser and it is a nice big LITTLE tractor . when he first bought it he and i were plowing together and my 706 that was a rag would lap him in the field pulling the same plow as i was pulling . Both tractors were C291 gassers and just the extra weight of the 66 over the 06 stole power . Neither tractor had loaded tires just three do nut sets bolted on the wheels . I had 600 on the nose as we were on some hills that would put the pucker factor into a flatlander Ron had nothing on the nose . In the wet spots he was stuck faster . Both tractors were tric.'s His ft would go down faster with no weight then mine did with 600 up ft. There are two I H tractors i have never cared much for , one is a 460 gasser and the other is the 766 gasser.
