power steering squeel/whine

First off, To all of you out there that take the time and energy to share your expertise and experiences THANK YOU! This is my second post/question. On my Farmall 504 it has the power assist steering under the steering wheel and an oil cooler for it in front of radiator and an after market wide front, no loader. It seems to have a very loud squeel (like air) coming from the cooler area at any rpm however if I turn the steering to the stops the noise seems to go away. I have changed hydraulic oil and filter and filled the oil to 8" below operator platform (higher than check plug). When I put a screwdriver on the 3 way diverter valve (the valve where you can adjust how much oil goes to the steering pump)it sounds kinda like the whine/squeel I hear in the front. 3 pt hitch and draft control all seem to work fine. Seen a post dated 10 July 2010 about PS check/relief valve. I do have the manual for the tractor. Any ideas?

With prior experience (different IH tractor model) the priority valve providing Hydraulic pressure to the steering, while maintaining the remainder for other applications, can squeel when little pressure is called for, and be quiet when dead headed against the end of steering travel. Kind of opposite of what happens in a car when it it quiet when going straight, and noisy when turned to the lock. Jim

I have a NOS valve. Email is open.

I would take the hose off coming from pump to the flow divider valve and look at the orfice to see if it is in place . It is a pressed in disc and sometimes they come out or turn side ways in the port. This will send too much oil through power steering circuit but since you have another pump for hitch which supplements aux valves they will still work all be it slower. I have seen this happen a few times.
