farmall h fuel issue

I have had some problems of late with the carb. Today while discing the tractor just sort of stopped running. Plenty of gas. Could get it to run a little with the choke opened. Put the throttle up and got it to run again temperamentally for a while and then just died. This happened a couple times in the past months. Notably while running a buzz saw. The carb has been leaking since about that time as well. Assuming it is related.

any thoughts?

I had rust flakes clogging the Sediment Bowl inlet. I make a fine mesh screen tube by soldering the end and seam closed. Attached it with 22 AWG bus wire and a grove in the nipple at the top of the Sediment Bowl. Haven had a problem after it was installed 10 years ago.

Definitely sounds like a fuel flow problem. Keep in mind the H does not have a fuel pump. The fuel is gravity fed, so all lines, filters, fuel tank exit fitting and carberator bowl, needle and seat must be kept clean. And no in-line filters other than the glass bowl.

Time for a new needle valve and seat, and a thorough inspection of the float, float pivot pin, and pivot pin bracket.

You can take the shotgun approach and start replacing everything or diagnose the problem.
You can measure the mount of gas flowing to the carburetor by removing the fuel line at the carb.
This will also give you access to the screen inside the carb for cleaning. When the gas in the trank is low, the pressure
at the carb will be about 0.25 PSI. When the gas tank is full, the pressure will be about 0.4 PSI.
