IH 574 TA Elimination Kit

Hi fellow tractor emthusiasts: I normally don't get over to this board very often but today I need some info. My good friend and neighbor has a 574 tractor that has had T/A issues for some time. The tractor is on secondary duty but with the backhoe and loader on it secondary duty is a bit of a misnomer. The T/A has not shifted (Direct drive only?) for some time but now will coast to a stop requring you to move the tractor a bit with the loader to get the powertrain to hook up again.I understand there to be a sprag clutch in the T/A which is likely failing now. Owner has located a kit to do away with the T/A My question is how much of a job is this to install? BTW I have made a living repairing farm equipment for 25 yrs just not this colour. Any tips or info would be appreciated, Thanks, Bob.

Elimate the TA is going to devalue the tractor. The labor is going to be not that more to install a rebuilt TA assy. Tell your customer to rebuild the TA than use it and enjoy!!! Armand

People gotta get some perspective here...

The TA goes bad in a 40, 50, 60 year old tractor, so people are stumbling all over themselves looking for a way to "eliminate" it... Makes no sense to me.

The TA lasted 40, 50, 60 years before it went bad. You are certainly not working it anywhere near as hard as it was worked before.

Replace the TA and the tractor will outlast you, your children, and your grandchildren!

However, since he already has the kit, may as well put it in. On a backhoe/loader it is going to be a BIG JOB. You really should pull the backhoe and loader off the tractor to make it easier and safer to split IMHO.

Whether you put in the kit, or replace the TA, it's pretty much the same job.

Frankly, I don't see how eliminating the TA in a backhoe/loader will devalue it much. The TA isn't much use, and most 574's didn't come with them anyway...

Well we have the pot stirring somewhat I see.....The owner of the tractor and myself agree that the need of the T/A on a dedicated loader, backhoe tractor is not that great,so he is happy to do the kit,end of story. The loader is a model 2250 with a complete sub frame which will not interfere with the split that much. The hoe is an early 1960's John Deere model 50. It had a quick attach feature which will remove it fom the tractor in under 5 min. (yes I timed Bill doing it once) so I don't look at this as a BIG job and the tractor will be more valuable when we are done as it will move.

Hi Bob,
My brother had a T/A elimination kit installed in his 684 about 6 years ago. He had a retired IH mechanic do the job.
The loader plus the loader frame will have to be removed to split the 574 at the bell howsing.

Thanks for the positive input guys....the split isn't the part I am thinking about (I used to work at a MF dealer Ag/Industrial...take a look at an old 50A or therabouts and envision putting a clutch in that.)I am wondering about the supply oil for the TA,does it end up being blocked off, what is the supply for that oil? seperate pump or does it feed off one of the other pumps? TIA, Bob

Hi Bob, I was not present when my brother had his T/A eliminator kit installed in his 684 but I did see the left over parts. There is a small hydraulic pump that runs off the PTO shaft that supplies the T/A. Go to caseih.com search for parts 574 Hydraulics figure 10-21 will show the hydraulic pump that is used for T/A or Fast Rev option. You should really buy an I&T Service manual as it has the procedure for removal, overhaul and re-install of T/A.

Refresh my memory. I didn't think a 574 had a ta! I believe it had 4 speeds on one lever and a low and high range with a reverse on a seperate lever. No ta. Tell me if I am wrong.

Bob

Two sticks to your left like you said, but "TA" models had the TA lever on the column to the left of the steering wheel, mirror image of the throttle lever.

Same set up as the F/R lever on the 8x8 trans tractors.
