I have a 51 super A that has been loading up, I cleaned the points and regapped, no good, messed with carb even swapped it with a BN carb I had that I knew worked and same result. Checked the gov. spring both are good. My plugs have a heavy carbon build up, not wet but not nice and burnt. I got the tractor from Ohio and it had champion D21"s, all my other farmalls use d18 the manual I have call for something different, What plug should I have and any ideas on what else I could check. Thinking I should do a compression check next.

I have a similar problem with my 2 C113s, perhaps not as bad as yours. Mine don't run enough,so the build up does not get burnt off. Both have had new pistons and sleeves. I blame it on too rich a mixture, I have thought about putting the adjustable main jet screw from the distillate/kerosene tractors, if I can find them and if they fit. If gene bender reads this, gene, what do you think? D21 should be hot enough, I think there is a D23.

I had that problem with my 666 gas so i put in the d21 plugs and i was told to put sae 30 low ash in the engine so i did that .So far so good. I was using 15w40 before.

I've got D21's in all my tractors and they have worked fine. Can't imagine having to go to a still high plug.

Scott I have had really good luck with the Autolite 386 plugs. I gave up on the Champions 10 years ago.

Check your air cleaner. Sad to say but the air cleaner is one thing most forget to service as it should be and if full of dirt or water or both it can make one run way to rich

I use them both but my tractors get used. The ones in the B with the Woods Mower havent been changed in yrs and we mow lots of grass. The tractor ride ones are the same havent been changed in yrs. Burn 10% blend and have for 30yrs or so since it was available. Too many tractors just dont get used hard enough.

Thanks everyone for your replies, I'll try the air cleaner and stick with the d21 or migtht try the auto lites. Not confident though maybe weak spark out of my distributor. I don't want to quit and take it to a pro. Yankee stubborn that way. I should be able to fix this.

My S/A does not like Champion plugs. It prefers Autolite. A guy at the discount auto store told me they buy Champion 'seconds'.
