The amp light on my Farmall 856 diesel stays on. We have replaced the voltage regulator (external),the wiring and connections are good (tractor was rewired approx. 6 yrs. ago),alternator tested good at the rebuild shop. Any suggestions?

Are you sure it is charging? Check it with a voltmeter at the alternator and at the battery.

Unplug the regulator and see if the light is off. If it stays on the problem is in the wiring or bulb socket. If it is not on plug it back in and unplug the alternator. If the light stays on the problem is in the wiring or regulator. If it is not on the problem is in the alternator.

First off, at least half the time when an alternator "tests" good, it's still bad. I don't know why automotive places even bother testing them, or why there is even a good indicator on the testing machine.

Second off are you assuming the wiring is good simply because it was replaced 6 years ago? If so you may be shooting yourself in the foot because a lot can happen in 6 years.

I found the problem in the multi plug at the voltage regulator. Thanks for the info. I'll keep it for future ref.
