The original subject was "Re: Farmall H Front Wheel Wobble".

im kinda new at working on restoring tractors is the worm gear for the steering suppose to have oil or grease i have the bad wobble also and mine has grease H

BTDT, The steering parts are probably shot. They are not adjustable. I replaced mine, steers great now.

Yes, it needs to be lubricated, 85W-140 works fine unless the seal is shot, then corn head grease.

The book says to use SAE 90 oil. Modern W85-130 oil is easier to get here. Grease is not good enough. It settles below the level of the gears and fails to lubricate them. Generally people put in grease (or self levelling grease) when the bolster seal has worn out. You will almost certainly need to replace the the seal and the sleeve in the bolster. If the gears are worn, these also should be replaced. As others have said, there is no substitute for rebuilding the steering assembly with new parts, set up correctly. I believe pretty well everything is available for the Farmall H. The steering gears themselves are the most expensive part if you need to replace them.

The seals are still available from CaseIH dealers. If you remove the old seal, any bearing supply shop should be able to match it.

Remove the old seal and go to any auto place with it and they can get a new one for you. Just dont tell them its for a tractor or they mite get crazy and say we dont have tractor parts like they ask when i ask for a 17250 belt.

Hi David, it is the only way to go. The play in the steering gear on my Farmall M was terrible before a rebuild. Now I am doing the Farmall H steering box. Replacing all seals, sleeves and the gears. It isn't cheap, but I need to know the machine is safe. When it has rubber tyres fitted and travels on the road in 5th gear, near enough just isn't good enough; it has to be right. There are many things that can be compromised, but steering and brakes are not in that category.
