Farmall H Sound in 5th gear.

Hello I have a 1943 farmall h that runs great, but lately when I put it in 5th gear I hear a sound like a chain hitting metal or like something metal is lose clanging around when the tractor bounces around at high speed. There is no noticeable engine or transmission problem. I was wondering if anyone might have a idea of what it could be.

Thanks for any Ideas.

IS it near the transmission? Or are you just hearing the hood rattle and maybe a loose wheel weight bouncing? Listen closer and pin point the area where its coming from.

Kind of hard to tell when your going at that speed where the noise is exactly coming from but it is low on the tractor. The wheel weights don't feel loose. I don't think proper maintenance has been done on this tractor (other than oil change and greasing) since my grandfather was alive over 45 years ago. Amazed it still runs so well.
Thanks for the help.

Check your rim clamps.. front and back.. I had that happen before and it took a while to find the noise. When I finally did find it, it was loose front wheel clamps.

I chased a new rattle that ended up being the swinging drawbar roller. Apparently I didn't get the bolts tight enough and they rattled loose about a year later.

I had a noise like yours. It turned out to be the brake band adjuster. I think the brake drum is out of round and makes contact with the band, causing the linkage to rattle.
