300 Utility oil

Hi, I just got me a 300 Utility with a t/a and was wondering what king of oil should be used in the transmission and how much.

Hi, Craig.

The operator's manual calls for "Approx. 7 gal." of SAE-80 lubricant for the "transmission and differential case."

Some guys do recommend Hy-Tran. That may work all right -- I don't know, so I'll defer to their expertise on that. There is no mention of Hy-Tran in the manual (although "IH Touch-Control Fluid" is there), so it may not have been developed yet back when the 300 Utility was built.

Gear oil was recommended by IH for tractors with a TA before they found out it caused problems. A supplement was also recommended. Hytran replaced all of that. Hytran is 10 weight, compared to the 80 or 90 weight of the gear oil.
