Farmall M Points

The ignition points on my Farmall M are not working correctly, the cam that opens the points only opens them on two of the high spots on the cam and the points either stay closed or barely open (depending on the adjustment), if I adjust it so they open, the other two high spots open the points waaaayy to far. I've tried 4 different cams in the distributor with the same issue, my other tractors don't have this issue. Am I missing something, or whats the problem here? BTW, its got an IH distributor

Andy - You've got a worn distributor shaft and upper bushing. Time for a distributor rebuild or replacement!

the bushing is still available through CaseIH, its around 50 bucks! did one last year, no bushing though an aftermarket would work easily did alot of hunting / machine shop.

Another thing to check. When you had the cam removed did you check for side to side play in the shaft it slides over? If play is okay the shaft may be bent and probably on the end the cam goes on. Are the 2 high and low cams side by side?

I'll check it when I get to it again, the cam has 4 high spots that open the points, my Delco upright had two I think.

Another Question:- Has anyone had experience with the electronic ignition conversion kits for these tractors? Do they perform well?

its fairly simple, just make sure to hook up the wires to the proper side of the coil, ive done two and ive never had any trouble with them and i dont have to reset the points ever,it seems like they dont wear out your cap & rotor as fast.
