Rear axles on a C saw-able ?

Are the rear axles on a Farmall C cut-able with a
metal cutting saw (hack saw or Porta-band) ?

Or are they too hard ?

If the axles were made of hardened steel, they wouldn't be able to absorb the twisting and shock loads they are subjected to. They would just break.

The outer surface of the axle is hardened with a much softer center. If you can cut the outer surface you surely will be able to saw through the rest of the axle.

Thanks for the input. Kinda what I thought. Tough, not hard steel.

The reason for this inquiry is that my son has a C that is too wide for his storage building, and we thought about cutting a few inches off the end of each axle to allow it to fit the entrance, but need to dress up the cut end so it still looks like it was machined that way.

I know, some purist will not be happy with this decision, but it works for us. The plan is to make it such that to the naked eye, one won't know the difference.

Jack up the wheel after cutting, put blocking under it and block the other wheel. With one person operating the tractor. run it in 3rd gear idle. while using a disk grinder on the end, this will create a swirl polish that is acceptable!.. Jim

When we bought our C they had been cut off with a torch. I jacked up one side at a time and put masking tape around it for a square mark and re-cut them with a porta-band. Then I did as Jim recommended and dressed them with a sanding pad. I also drilled a new center in them.
