Farmall M Oil Filter 376375R91

Just wondering if people like to use genuine oil filters on their tractors or aftermarket filters? The IH dealers here have at last made the price of Farmall M filters more reasonable than in the past. A filter is now $17 instead of $65. So I have bought a couple and will see how they go. Happily my Farmall H takes the same filter, so I don't need two sizes.

I did once make the grievous error of using a Ryco R117P filter. If you like a filter which is difficult to fit and falls to pieces in service and then requires pliers to remove the debris, I have a couple left over and would very nearly pay someone to take them away.

Any suggestions or preferences for other filters? I believe Baldwin are well regarded, but I had trouble getting the sealing rings with their filters in the past, and their retailers know how to charge in Australia!

I run whatever is the cheapest, pretty much whatever
is available now is way better then stuff from the
40's and 50's.

I've used NAPA, Wix, Baldwin, Fleetguard, Purolator, and probably other brands of filters on these engines. I've never had an issue with any of these. I've probably only used a "genuine" IH/CIH filter once or twice on these engines.

Some come with gaskets, some don't. Don't turn down a quality filter for lack of a gasket, and don't use one of questionable quality because it comes with one.

Baldwins are very good filters, and they come with a new gasket.

If someone is selling the 376375R91 to you for $17 they are ripping you off!!! This should be in $10-$12 range for a genuine CIH filter.

As for filter brands, OEM, and FLEETGUARD (I.M.O.) are the best. Worst brand is Baldwin...

Cut the filters apart sometime and you'll quickly see why.

I use NAPA/WIX.not because they are "better",but
they are readily available/handy.I'll be willing to
bet that the 'genuine'oem CIH;JD;AGCO,etc, are all
made by WIX;Baldwin;FLeetgard,etc.

I've been using NAPA's recently. Most NAPA gold filters are made by Wix. Some filters that are slower moving items are stamped with a Wix number and come in a plain brown box with both a NAPA sticker and part number and a sticker with the Wix number on it. Good, solidly constructed filters. I bought a case each of the shorter and taller narrow H/M elements this spring when they were running a filter promotion locally. Under $4 for the short one with a gasket, and around $6 for the taller one after buying a gasket that isn't included for some reason.

NAPA's 06/56/66/86 hydraulic filters come with all mounting gaskets for each type of cover. Nice bonus for a quality filter.

One of those sad things, if you live in Australia you pay more for these things. I could buy a filter for less in the U.S. and then spend money shipping them here and be no better off, so I just have to take the prices as they are here. Same goes for buying tractors. Try to buy a Farmall M for anything under $3000 here and it will be a toy model, not the real thing.
Baldwin filters are outrageously expensive here. It would almost be cheaper to use no filter and just change the oil every second day. Not sure about Fleetguard as it is hard to find a dealer who wants to sell less than 500 filters at a hit. One thing I like about the CaseIH filters is that they fit easily, unlike Ryco. I just hope they filter well.

Baldwins are very comparably priced here, but the shipping to over there would probably still be a deal breaker, even if you ordered them in a large quantity.

I guess we're spoiled here in the US. I bet there is 20+ aftermarket options for this filter available here yet today. I am not saying they're all good filters in my opinion, but the options are there if someone is so inclined.

If the CIH ones available to you in Australia are the same ones available here, they're a quality filter. If you're comfortable with the price, buy it. It's around 1/4th the price of what you said it once was. I wouldn't pay $40 (USD) for one of these filters ever, but I wouldn't immediately run away from the roughly $10 price that CIH dealers sell them for, either.

Something that doesn't fit or function properly or to your satisfaction isn't worth buying at any price.

Andrew Z is right. The filter tech today is much better than it was 50 years ago. Wix are good filters as well as the others that are mentioned. I laugh at some of the armchair mech advice that is given. I've lived major engine work daily for forty years. I've learned that there are three kinds of mechanics.
The one that can do it.
The ones that only talk about it.
The ones that can do it but are tired of hearing everyone's problems.

This is absolutely true, but some execution of the technology available is quite poorly done. Certain Fram spin on engine oil filters have been of questionable quality for many, many years. This includes many of those style of filters that Fram manufactures for others.

I wouldn't want a star-type element filter in my Farmall or the toilet paper roll filter in any of my vehicles today. I don't want a new Fram spin-on off the shelf, today, either.

I gave up aftermarket crap and stick with CNH for all my filters. It is a crapshoot on fit and if they will come with a new seal from what I have seen. Not to mention the morons ordering the filters at a parts store versus a person walking to the shelf without even looking it up at the dealer.
