IH 444 gas engine oil

After pain stakingly rebuilding my 444 gas job finally got it running has about 55 psi oil pressure but when it heats up drops down to about 50psi, A guy I have breakfast with informed me this morning that I probably just ruined the new overhaul by running with 30 weight non- detergent oil, he said I should be running multi viscosity oil in that engine, he for years worked at a local IH dealership that is now since closed, should I drop the pan and replace the bearings again? or just drain the oil and fill it with 10w-30 or something, thanks in advance for any insight into this

I would say the engine is still ok, multi visc oil is going to be better for your cold starts, I would suggest dropping oil and running a multi visc oil, the detergents will help keep it clean too.

You are not hurting it at all. Run it for 20 hours with that oil, then change it to 15-40 diesel grade, or 10-40 car oil. Use multi vis to improve starting, and keeping it clean inside. Give thought to the dramatically improved oils made today. Jim

That "guy" is giving you bad advice.

15-40 is my preference, but straight 30wt will not harm your engine.

I recommend doing what Janicholson suggested.

Hardly a chance that ruined it just using nondetergentated oil - engines somehow ran for almost a century before multi grade detergentated oils appeared. It will last longer and run cleaner between oil changes if you do run a modern multigrade.
