Removing RTV silicone from castings

I just removed a countershaft front seal retainer casting from a Farmall M which had been sealed with RTV silicone. I have some Permatex gasket remover but it specifically says it does not work on RTV silicones.

Got me wondering specifically what products or techniques some of you use to ensure the surfaces are cleaned down to bare metal without any residue.

Any suggestions and advice is appreciated.

Keith a sharp gasket scrapper works well, and for those areas that are a special pain a Scotchbrite pad or sandpaper used lightly will get the rest.

if it's in the casting pores a steelbrush will work.

The RTV sealers are normally very easy to get off,
it is the anaerobic type sealers that are hard to
remove. They dry very tough in the absence of air
where as the Room Temp Sealer (RTV) cures when
exposed to the air but never gets really hard.

Aerosol carb cleaner or brake cleaner and a wire brush.

I rebuild water pumps and t/a"s for a living. Lots of rtv to
remove. I use a plastic brush type wheel on a drill made by
3m and follow up with a shot of brake kleen for residue. I like
the plastic because its not aggressive enough to remove the
metal and still does a fantastic job.

permatex makes a silicone specific gasket remover. The
most current product might even be both silicone and
traditional gasket compatible. There's a lot of development in the sealant industry--I've found many of
the products I used recently as 5-10 years ago have superseded to new numbers and discontinued in some
cases.
