656 hydro exploratory

Thanks Pete23 for your suggestion on removing third link plate on 656 to locate pick up tube for hydraulic pump on hydro. Done that today to find that the tube is all chewed up, broke loose from whatever mechanism is supposed to hold it in place and smashed the end of the tube shut. Also had the portion that is connected to rubber hose between tube sections torn. Took the part and headed for the local IH dealer to be informed that the part is no longer available. He suggested I manufacture something to take the damaged parts' place. He also gave me the parts diagram with accompanying numbers to determine what the original was supposed to look like! Do you or anyone else on the forum have suggestion as to what to do next. Can a rubber hose with a single braid take place of the steel portion that is damaged. Obviously something below the oil level of the tractor reservoir/rearend was supposed to hold the metal tube in place. Thanks
in advance for insights.

Question, is the main suction tube loose (38 in parts illustration)or is it the pipe the hose hooks onto that has come loose from the main suction tube. I am trying to remember how pipe fastens to tube as I have it in my head that the hydrostatic tractors used a larger aluminum suction tube than the steel tube used in gear drives which pipe was welded to tube. If main tube is loose you may be in big trouble as I have had to split them to repair on gear drives when bracket broke off where it is bolted on. If main suction tube is tight you might be able to just leave the return hose off entirely as long as main tube is well below oil level. I have seen guys do this when some loads like loaders drop so fast it keeps blowing the hose off or bursting it. The reason for the hose and pipe is because the pumps deliver more gal per min than the capacity of the reservoir so it depends on what you are using if it will get you by or not.

Don't know if this will help you or not. Pictures are of a Hydro 70...your tractor should be similiar.

The manifold in the top picture bolts up to the floor with bolts coming from the bottom up; you can just see the one on the right.

Second picture is the same tube coming up from the bottom feed.
