Farmall 300 PTO problem?

I removed the covers and checked the drive gear and the seasonal disconnect. The seasonal disconnect looks fine inside and works fine, the lever is just a bit out of whack. The drive gear does not seem to have any missing teeth but it rocks at least 3/4" back and forth without turning the engine and when I set the IPTO lever to the engaged position I can turn the shaft by hand very easily. When I turn the PTO 'forward', (the direction it would go under power) it makes a sound like a slip clutch, sort of a light thunk. When I turn it backward it clicks at the same rate as the thunk. I am guessing that the splines on the PTO drive gear behind the clutch are probably stripped, does that sound likely from the symptoms or is it something else? Are parts available for this problem and does it mean I need to split the tractor? Any advice will be much appreciated.

Sounds like that could be it or the top PTO drive gear behind the clutch striped. PTO with handle back should turn the engine. If the splines are striped a pressure plate and probably the pto drive shaft with gear needed. Yes a split at engine rear.

Thank you very much. I'll have to open it up. Will it cause further harm to run the engine with the clutch blocked prior to replacing the affected parts?

Those pto parts turn anytime the engine runs.
Try starting and if there's a bad noise I would shut it down. If you removed the bottom cover under the pto drive gear to look at the teeth. See if the gear and shaft will move up and down to get a idea if a bearing is bad. Top shaft with drive gear could also have bad bearings but that doesn't seem to happen often. If the pressure plate was unbolted from flywheel through the lower cover. I don't know if it could be kept away from the flywheel enough to eliminate the danger of catching the turning flywheel.

Thanks, that makes sense. I will check on the play in the shaft as you described. I'll split the tractor and that way I can keep twiddling with the engine and also see what needs to be replaced in the clutch area and check on the TA. I took the top cover off and the TA turns easily one way but not the other, so that makes me think the the sprague clutch is working. The TA is in low currently but the lever is broken off and it can't be shifted.
