Farmall M 5th Gear sliding out

I have a "49 Farmall M. It tends to slide out of 5th gear occasionally. It also doesnt seem to seat into the gear as deep as the other gears. Maybe thats the gear size. How can I make it better?

It isn't supposed to seat into gear like the others. It only goes about half way. That is because it is cut inside of 4th gear.

Could be a worn bearing on the top shaft, bad spring that holds the ball into the detent, or a worn out 5th gear from sliding it into 5th while moving. These are the most common things. You never know what you might see when you get in there...

The sliding rails get bent over the years. I take the belt pulley assembly off and smash the rail with a sledge.

Thanks for the help gents. To access the 4th and 5th, i need to remove the top cover huh? Does anyone have any pictures of this so i can have a reference? Also does anyone have any pictures of the problems bent fork, worn gear, etc to reference?

Thanks

Yep, pull the top cover.

I had a bad spring and a worn out gear on my H. You can check out the process on my photobucket. It is the same as your M, just smaller.

Down this page, or the next, there is a post with the same question. Many more pictures in the archives. Bates equipment in Indiana has the parts. Sticker shock can be a problem.
