F20 Crankshaft Removal in Stuck Engine

If I remove the front and rear bearing cases and connecting rod caps, is it possible to get enough movement of the connecting rods and clearance to remove the crank --- if the pistons are stuck? If this is possible, it seems it would be easier to pound out a single piston at a time, pounding on one with resistance on the other three. Does this make sense?

Thanks,

Dan

If soaking the pistons with atf doesn't free them
I would move the tractor away from any building and remove anything flammable. Then pour kerosene or diesel fuel on top of a piston and set it on fire. Pull the head and oil pan off.
Only do one piston at a time and have the rod cap off. When the flame dies down use a piece of 2 X 2 oak and big hammer and see if the piston will move when placing that oak against the connecting rod and smacking the the oak. The sleeve may come out with the piston. Use a torch to free the piston. Hal

if you had only one or possibly two pistons stuck, it could be done but a bit of a chore. if you have all four stuck, its not gonna happen.

Just depends how bad they are stuck, how many are
stuck and what position they are stuck in. But no,
you can't remover the crank with the rods in the
way. But you can take a torch and cut the rods off
if you have to. And yes, the pistons will go out the
top if you cut the rod off. Otherwise they go out
the bottom. I always get the pistons out first and
then the crank if necessary

Thanks, everybody, for the comments. I have at least one very badly stuck and I've had it soaking for six months. It never drains past the piston like the others. One drains quite a bit slower the remaining two, so I'm guessing it's stuck but maybe not as bad. The pistons are all about mid-range in the cylinder. And the top of the sleeves are very rough and rusty for the ones that are stuck. The other two look pretty nice on top. Inside the engine looks very clean and shiny for the bottoms of the sleeves, camshaft, connecting rods etc. Hate to butcher anything if it can be avoided.

I soaked my 39 F-20 for a year and then removed the head and oil pan. Then I took a piece of wood and put it on top of the pistons and hit it with a hammer. Mine came loose without too much trouble.

I have removed stuck pistons & sleeves from F20, F30 and 10-20 engines and what works best for me is to press the pistons and sleeves together out the top of the block, then you can remove the crankshaft. Just put the piston & sleeve in a press and press the piston out of the sleeve.

If you're not in a hurry, keep trying to get it loose.
use a hone, wirebrush, whatever you have to get all the
rust out of the part of the sleeve you can see.
If you have been soaking it with no success, like Toro said,
set the holes on fire. Let it burn awhile and hopefully
you will start to see small bubbles coming up at the piston/sleeve junction.
of the tough one.
Put it out, give all piston tops a hardwood whack.
use your floorjack to put upward pressure with a hardwood post
on a crank throw going up. [b:5f8ed7c3ac]be gentle here[/b:5f8ed7c3ac]
hardwood whack a piston top that is going down.
when you see the slightest movement, soak everything in oil
and keep it moving until free.

How do ypu press the sleeves and pistons out? Do you have a special tool?

Please post your technique.

I made a simple frame that will hold the engine block upside down in my press without having to remove the head studs. I also turned a puck on my lathe that fits on the bottom of the sleeve, I cut a notch out of it to clear the connecting rod.

This is a tool I made for pulling F20 crankshaft out. It will also work on F30 crankshafts.
