H will not throttle up

My 1947 H will not throttle up off of idle. It starts O.K. but idles rough. When I throttle it up it wants to die so I throttle it back down right away and then it idles great. I"ve done a restore on this tractor but not the engine. It ran good before restore. I"ve done a generic carb rebuild with gaskets and one needle, rewire, plugs and points. I"ve had the carb back apart twice more to inspect and clean and I"m sure I"ve got the govenor connection to carb correct. Might it be the governor or timing or carb yet? Settings on carb are: idle screw out 1/2 half turn only,(or it will stall), govenor screw backed mostly out, run screw out at least 3 or more turns.

It sounds like you have a blockage in the carb

Sorry you did not restore it you just fixed it up. To restore means to bring it back to new or better.
As for your problem sounds like you may not have gotten the carb back on correctly and if it is not they will do funny things. Easy to get the gov to carb hook up wrong and when that happens they can do just what your is doing

Just some rough guessing here -

probably not the governor - the governor only opens or closes the carb, it wouldn't make the engine stumble. Rule that out for now.

Do a quick check to be 100% sure your plug wires are connected in the proper order. Crossing a couple can result in some very weird behavior. Might as well make sure each one is sparking while you're at it.

Make sure your choke is operating properly. Take the air cleaner hose off - make sure it's opening fully.

Assuming you're using fresh gas...

If that all checks out - and it's dying upon opening the throttle, it's most likely too high of an air to gas ratio. That means you're either getting too much air, or not enough gas.

Check for leaks at the carb mount and intake manifold to head.

Make sure gas is coming from the tank to the carb in a steady stream.

Sounds like it will be - sounds more like blockage in the carb.

Pull the carb apart and go through it all one last time, cleaning every little passageway you can find - be obssesive. blast everything with compessed air. Use torch tip cleaners to push throgh little passageways. You may have missed something.

One other thing to check - you said you put new points in - did you clean up the face of them?

Somtimes they have a coating on them that needs to come off.

Try some very fine sand paper and give them a quick wipe (don't go crazy - just three or four light strokes)

Make sure the horizontal governor rod into the carb is fitting correctly. It is easy to not get it in the slot.

You're saying you put 1 new needle in the carb--which one?? Did you compare the needle tips before installing? Old vs. new?? Some kits have idle needles that may be different & cause trouble.

Kind of sounds like the classic symptoms of an H engine that just plain and simple is not warmed up yet. I've got two Hs and one M that behave the same exact way. Let'em set and run at about half throttle for 3 to 4 minutes and they're good to go.

Did you replce the main jet packing ? Of so, it is possible that a crumb of the packing came loose and is blocking your fuel flow.
