SA Steering housing

I'm trying to remove the steering worm gear shaft and bearing, and obviously, don't know what I'm doing.

I've removed the three small bolts to the steering worm wheel shaft bearing retainer and was hoping the shaft, steering worm wheel and bearing would lift right out. Well, I was.

Help.

Equeen, Try a few wacks with a rubber mallet, or pump some grease in the top fitting to force it out. Should come out easy. When you get the box overhauled, you will be glad you did it.
Best Regards,
Charlie

You're not doing anything wrong - it's just being difficult.

Here's a few pictures to help confirm what you probably already know should be on the other side. Nothing fancy - that bearing just needs to slide out.

Try to get something under the gear to give you some leverage.

If all alse fails you could use a torch to heat up the casting around the bearing - just don't go too hot - you don't want to crack anything.

Sometimes warming it up a little bit is enough to loosen the grip.

Thanks Mr. Sutton and Charlie.

Rubber mallet, grease, heat sounds better than my plan 19 - the sledge hammer on the top part of the housing.

Success!

Used a little heat, then grease, then thought about that little plug on top. Removed it, stuck a center punch into the hole onto the shaft, then a few moderate taps with a hammer and out it came.

Good to hear.

Do you have a rebuild kit? Are you swapping out the brass bushings?

If so - they're even tougher to remove. I ended up having to slice mine lengthwise with a hack saw

No rebuild kit yet.

The steering gear housing was split into two pieces because of a wreck with the old 52 tractor by someone. I purchased the reamins of an old 49. Didn't like the tie rods on the 49, thus I went into both housings to swap out some parts and see if I could get a fit. It appears okay. Cleaned-up, oiled and waiting for engine work and other needs regarding the 52 before finishing the steering.
