Factory 12 negative ground with 12v generator.
How do I check output voltage of generator when running with my multimeter? It appears ammeter is miswired also as the needle moves to the right when you turn the ignition switch on with the key, prior to cranking.

Wayne is correct, but!!! if you have a digital meter, there is probably no way to get a reading. A 200.00 Fluke Will dampen the reading, but most meters will take a sample 10 times a second, and display what ever it finds in that instant. A needle type meter will be far more satisfactory. The Generator and regulator put out radical static, and overlapping partial sine wave DC electricity. The battery likes that as well as pure DC, but the meter does not.
Reading from post to post on the battery is also OK. Jim

AMP ga has not been changed someone did change the polarity should be pos gnd thats why the meter is reading backwards.

The open unloaded output of a generator dont really tell ya all that much and if undamped depending on the meter you use it may be jumpy n all over the map. Its to what voltage it raises a good battery (acts as a load/filter/buffer/capacitor etc) that tells you more. A good battery ought to read around 12.6 volts setting but if hooked to a good working genny it should rise to at least 13 and up to 14 depending on engine RPM and condition of battery and genny.

My Troubleshooting Procedure may help more?
