Are they similiar or is the 560 heavier built? I know the bell housing is larger on 560, do any parts interchange? Did the 656 all come with console shift?

It is a good improvement in most areas, it is a mix of some 460 size parts but for the most parts are from 560, has tapered Timken bearings in rear axle, brake shafts & differential, some in transmission & live hydraulics/IPTO. The hydraulics were much improved, 3 point hitch, full hydrostatic power steering. The engines were still old Gas C263 or D282 but run at lower RPM at pto speed. It was a easier shift trans but was still only 5 forward & 1 reverse. The 666/686 had better diesels, D312 US IH engine, then D310 german IH.

656 big improvment over 560 they may look light, but it is what is on the inside that counts!!!!!

All 656s have the console shift. They also have the same size axle shafts. I know our 656 was a better shifting tractor at 20K hours than our 560 was at 8K hours.

That's very odd that you'd have more trouble with a 560 than a 656.

656 shifters are much more complicated, lots of linkages to wear out and get sloppy. A 560 shifter is just a bent rod that goes straight into the forks.

Betcha your TA was out of adjustment on the 560 and the TA clutch wasn't releasing.

The 560 shifting forks were worn out and I don't know how many times it got stuck in two gears. Never had those issue with the 656.
