On a C I'm having troubles getting the ring and pinion set right. My problem is, when I tighten down the countershaft nut, it pulls the pinion gear out too far to properly mesh with the bevel gear. I've taken all the shims out and it's still set out too far.
When I took it apart, the countershaft nut was barely finger tight. When I put the nut on like it was, the gear mesh looks real good, until I roll it the other direction and the whole countershaft moves about a 1/8th inch out of the case. The cast cover over the nut was cracked when I took it apart so I wonder if this is how it was before?
Could something be worn down causing this extra slack, or did I miss something?
Am I correct that adding shims behind the countershaft front bearing flange will move the pinion gear out farther from the ring gear?
Thank you
