New Farmall Cub

Hi to all. New to the forum and Farmall tractors, so got a lot of questions. Just bought a Farmall cub S/N 18717 to play with. Seems to be a "48. Runs very good. Trying to change all of the fluids. Got the oil. Could use some advise on the transmission & hydraulics i.e where"s the drains, fills, type fluids, any other suggestions. All information appreciated.

The first accessory you should buy for your new tractor is a reprint copy of the owner's manual. All the fluid locations and capacities are in there along with a lot of other useful information, and not to forget the strange little safety cartoons...

IIRC there are only six places for fluid in the Cub:
1. Engine - use your favorite engine oil
2. Touch Control - Use CaseIH Hytran or an oil labeled as compatible
3. Transmission - Use your favorite heavy gear oil
4. Left final drive - Gear oil again
5. Right final drive - More gear oil
6. Steering box - Even more gear oil

Engine has a drain plug on the oil pan and a dipstick to check level.
Touch control drains on the bottom right and fills on the top left. Fill up to the level of the fill plug.
Transmission has a drain on the bottom, fill on the top, and a level check plug on the left side behind the fender.
Final drives are drained by removing the pans, and are filled through plugs on the inside, until oil runs back out.
Steering box has three plugs near each other. Bottom is drain, middle is level, top is fill.

Thx. for the info. Just ordered a manual this morning as after reading a lot of posts a little confused even on the oil. Had read some that say use 10W 30, but now seeing some others that say differently. What are you using? Thx

I use 15W-40 year-round in the engine and Hy-Tran in the transmission. Depending on the condition of your tranny you may find that the latter makes it drippy and whiny, in which case 80W-90 would be a better choice.

i use 15-40 diesel rated in mine for engine oil, ordered a pac of filters from this site since the kid at the parts store didnt know how to look it up, gear oil in the trans, rear end final drives and steering gear, light motor oil in the fan hub[ this has a procedure to fill, explained in the manual],mine is a working cub, its pretty from 40 feet away, it works for a living just like it was intended to, so closer inspection revels not so pretty lol

Thx. to all for the advise. I"m sure I"ll have a lot more questions as I go along. Waiting for my manuals to come in then will be ready to go.
