51 H Camshaft gear replacement.

I recently purchased a live power pump with manifold and distributor included from ebay for $75. Not knowing if it was a good, functional unit I installed it, and it works perfectly. Now that I have enough oil pressure to tear the front end of the tractor completely off, I want to upgrade the camshaft gear. I"m told using a loader with the original camshaft gear is risky. I have found from a local salvage yard a 6664-DB gear for $45, which I"m told is the best gear possible. I need some good instructions on replacing that. Ideally I would like to remove the front cover and put a gear puller on it and jerk it off, no pun intended. I would really like to avoid removing the cam shaft itself, unless it is really easy. Any help would be really appreciated.

Production of strong cam gears started mid production 1951, so if yours has engine casting codes that are late in the year, it is good to go. Jim

IH didn't make the 6664DB gear for production tractors or C169 engines until the middle of 1955. After that it was used as the replacement gear for C152, C164 and C169 engines made before that time. Due to the 6664DB gear hub machined for a tighter fit on the camshaft it was recomended the camshaft be supported behind the front cam bearing journal when pressing the gear on.

If your engine codes are from July I hink I would assume it was good to go. There are listings of the Date codes in the archives. I do not have them n my head. Jim

So your talking about removing the radiator and pulling it out the front so i can use a press. How do I detach the shaft, is it attached in the rear of the motor. this level of mechanics is new to me. Any advise would be helpful.

To get the cam out requires removing the valve pushrods, rockers, from the valve train and other components (oil pump, pan, and lifter cover). The pulling up and holding of the lifters is needed to prevent them falling out of their bores. (the engine is not upside down!!) Jim
