I have an F-20 that has water in the 2nd cylinder. Is there a way to tell what cracked? How are is it to rebuild an F-20 engine?

They used wet sleeves in those engines and should be easy to rebuild. I would have the head magna-fluxed to make sure its not cracked. Look for cracks in the engine block. Checked the cylinder head to make sure it isn't warped.

You could try replacing the head gasket and torque the head starting in the center and working out in both directions. Use about 3 steps when doing this until you reach the max torque. Once you have the engine started and heated up I would go over the max torque one more time. Don't loosen any. Hal

My neighbors A did the same thing and it was a cracked cylinder sleeve. It was obvious once he got the head off.

if it didn't get down the exhaust it could be head or gasket or possibly a sleeve. I had one basically rust through in the port area and fill a cylinder. Don't get too worried about cracks in the head, almost every one I have seen is cracked between the two center cylinders. The cooling system is not pressurized so small cracks in the combustion area are not necessarily a big deal. If it rusted, cracked through the port, its junk.Pull the head, it should be pretty easy to see where its coming in.

If you wick out the water with paper towel. Crank engine to TDC #2 and remove manifold. Let it sit with water in jacket if water comes out valve ports the crank or leak is in the head. If water fills cylinder Than it is in the sleeve or gasket. oldiron29

well, in any case, you are going to have to remove the head. So, start there and take a good look at the head gasket. If it is leaking, they usually are very obvious. Start then, then dig deeper.
