1957 IH 130 with positive ground with a distributor has got no spark. I do have 6 volts to the positive side of the coil so I know my on/off switch works. I also have 6 volts to the negative side, have cleaned and gapped the points to .020 but am unsure of my next checkpoint-coil? The tractor was recently running but I guess I haven"t paid her enough attention Thanks for all the advice-I"m never disappointed

Actually on a positive ground system the hot wire from the switch should go to the - side of the coil and the + side to the points. Not that that in itself will keep it from working. Open and close the points with your screw driver. When the points open you should have fire out of the high tension (center) terminal on the coil. If you do not I'd change the coil. (and hook it up correctly)

Rub the points with 320 wet or dry until shiny.
Then see if the engine will start. If they're pitted replace them. Hal

Usually when a tractors setting there the points would most likely be closed so with respect to frame ground THERE SHOULDNT BE ANY VOLTAGE ON THE COILS TO DISTRIBUTOR TERMINAL. If there is the points arent fully closed or are badly burned, try to clean n file them or replace them n see what happens.

My Ignition troubleshooting procedure may help, run through it.......

Pull the cap rotor and dust cover. Turn it on. Then open and close the point by hand. Be careful when you do that or you will find spark the hard way. You should both hear and see spark when you open the points. If you do not then the points need cleaned or you have a short between the coil and points since the points are what turns the coil on and off and that is what produces the spark
