Removing coupling on H belly pump

Have tried and failed to remove coupling on H pump to install new seal. Simply won't budge. Haven't tried heat on it yet, would that help? Any ideas welcome. Have done several of these, but no luck on this one. Any ideas welcome.

Are you talking about the coupling on the end of the pump, or the coupling between the pump and transmission?

You have to insert rod into the pump to prevent the gears from turning and then unscrew the coupling. I believe it has reverse threads.

The use of a brass or aluminum strap stuck in the opening. to lock the gears.
A 1/2" square "key Stock" is made of tough steel and will be the primary torque applier. As force is applied, striking the key (lefty loosy) will do it. Jim

You don't say how far apart you have pump. I normally just rap on them with a brass drift and if that does not work I take them apart and clamp the gear in blocks in vise. Many of those pumps have run that large spring inside through the gears and damaged, even stripped the threads so they can be really tough. Have had to cut off a couple. Putting a rod in between gears requires taking the pump out of the reservoir to get in through the inlet to gears.

Sorry I didn't make myself clear. Yes, the pump is out of the reservoir. I put a screwdriver covered with ductape in the inlet to stop it from turning and attempted to dislodge the coupling by using a pipe wrench, hammer, chiesel. No luck. Only thing I haven't tried is some flat stock in the groove in the coupling 'cause I didn't have anything like that.

IIRC I used a prybar or big screwdriver on edge to spin mine off. Mine must have been much easier to get off than yours.

You may want to weld keystock to a impact socket and do it that way.

Handy dandy homemade belly pump coupler remover. Will work on the trans countershaft coupler also. Just put an impact on the nut and she'll spin right off.

(quoted from post at 08:07:42 09/15/12) Thanks. Great photo and part. I'm thinking Ill have to go to that method.

If I ever build another one, I'll use a smaller nut, and I'll add something to keep it centered in the slot.

The one in the picture was built in somewhat of a hurry, and I used what I had laying around.

Good call on welding it to a nut. A lot cheaper than using a n impact socket...
