Vent tube help, W/PIC

Im going to build my own vent tube from the head on my M to the air cleaner this weekend. As you see in the picture (sorry its the best i have right now) the whole that is in the air cleaner does not have a bracket to screw a fitting into it like I have seen on others. Do I need to weld a fitting in there to make it air tight or can I just place the fitting into the open whole? Thanks for the help, Anthony

Yes, you should weld in a fitting. Not a huge job to do and the rest of the filter looks OK. If the breather tube is open to the elements, you can get junk in the tube. Not sure about where you are, but here it would take a very short time before mud wasps built a nest inside the tube and choked it off.

The previous owner of my M apparently had the same problem. You can see where he layed down a big gorilla weld [often referred to here in Texas as strong but ugly] Looks to be brazed. Don't matter how it looks. Nobody will see it. Only you will know.
