Farmall H & M Lugs & Skid Rings - Where to Find?

I am looking for replacement lugs for rear steel wheels for both my Farmall H and M tractors. Also looking for new skid rings for the front cast iron wheels. Are the lugs or skid rings available anywhere? I did ask the local CaseIH dealer and they just laughed. The answer I got was "No chance, mate."

The second the US Government stopped rationing rubber near the end of WWII, steel wheels became instantly obsolete. There hasn't been a production tractor fitted with steel wheels from the factory in 77 years.

I think it's pretty much a given that you're not going to find a steady reliable supplier for what you're looking for sitting new on a shelf anywhere.

You're looking at custom fabrication to get what you need. Do you have any old-time blacksmiths, the kind that heat the steel in a forge and beat it on anvils with hammers, around?

Yes, I was beginning to think that. There is a blacksmith at Sovereign Hill in Ballarat. I had new hitches made for the disc harrows there. The two blacksmiths working there really enjoy their job. It looks as though the lugs should not pose too much of a problem. Not sure about the skid rings, though they do have a device for bending steel. Not sure what grade of steel to use for the lugs or skid rings either…

Well, actually IH DID offer rear steel wheels at least up to the 706/806 series.

You are wromg about the 77 years, The 706 and 806's could mstill be purchased on steel, although most or all so equipped were exported.

Well, it never occurred to me that steel wheels were available for so long! I'll keep on looking around!

Even though IH did offer steel wheels up through the mid 1960's, that does not mean that dealer shelves are going to be overflowing with replacement lugs and skid rings. Heck, are '06 lugs even close to being the same as H lugs?

I'm not saying that there aren't any of these parts out there. I'm saying that if there are, they are few and far between. They are sitting in the way back of some old IH dealer's parts room, long since forgotten.

Depends on how desperate you are for the parts and how important original parts are to you. If you can wait months or years (or forever), then continue your search. If your lugs are nothing more than rounded-off nubs, you might want to call the blacksmith.

For the skid ring, blacksmiths often have ring rollers, but a wheelwright would definitely be able to take care of that for you. If you don't happen to have an old-time wheelwright available, a shop that does wrought iron work could roll a ring for you.
