12 volt conversion

Just train the guy on the starter switch not to lean on it for long attempts to start the tractor. The 6V starter will live a long time on 12V if you don't abuse it. Freind had a M-38 Jeep (24V) killed the starter dropped one out of a '46 Chevy 1 1/2 ton (6V)into it it worked for quite a while.

Ive converted from 6 to 12 and used the old 6 volt starter at 12 volts and never had any problems HOWEVER that can be tough on starter drives and starers and perhaps flywheel ring gear teeth due to such strong initial kick in torque !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My self and Ol Bob M have discussed this and are of the opinions when doing this NOT to use a super heavy high capacity battery (like a 1000 CCA, maybe a wimpy 500 CCA instead) orrrrrrrrrrr maybe use lighter gauge (like 4 or 2 instead of 1 or 0) battery cables EITHER OF WHICH can reduce the problem to some extent.

I think Jim or Bob have some recommendations far as the type of starter drive to use??????

Thats the best I can tell ya

Ol John T and all

Hey John T - The original, stock 6 volt starter and inertia (Bendix) drive are still on my Super M. It was my first alternator conversion - therefore it has survived on 12 volts for 30+ years now.

The only part I've had to replace was the commutator end plate. The original die cast (pot metal) plate cracked into several pieces - I presume from repeated impact reactions by the armature as the bendix spins out. The replacement commutator plate is stamped steel and is holding up fine.

As you suggest I use a smallish, 525 CCA battery in an attempt to limit starter inrush current. The tractor still has stock #0 AWG battery cables however.

Not a problem with polairity but you should change the small wires on the coil moving what's on + to - and what's on - to +, and you'll have to reverse the wires on the ampmeter or get used to it reading backwards (discharge means charge, Charge means discharge).

Reverse polarity is NOT a problem on your starter, it will still turn the same direction regardless. However, as noted I would correct the ignition coil polarity (and ammeter leads) if battery polarity got reversed.
