WooHoo! H hydraulics work!!!

I posted some time back about running a log splitter off my belly pump. Well, I finally got all the hoses connected, the return line fitted to the filler/breather and the valve on the splitter hooked up. Gave it a try today and sure enough, works like a charm. I suppose that old pump hadn't been used very much over the years.

Now for a question. I filled it with 303 hydraulic fluid, then read somewhere online that I shoulda used 30wt motor oil as the hydraulic fluid is too thin and will leak out of the pump. Any truth to this?

Dan,Ive got a friend that I gave a H to and he did exactly what you did and it worked fine,Here on the east we havesome pertty tough wood

If the oil gets hot from a lot of use then you may loose pressure. Had it happen on my H plowing a short field. Lots of lifting the plows made the oil warm enough it wouldn't lift. Never had the problem with 30wt.

303 fluid is just fine. The original specs called for 30wt NON-DETERGENT motor oil because non-detergent would not foam and create air bubbles in the system, and also, at that time, it was the best there was.

303 fluid is a generic equivalent of Hy-Tran.

"303 fluid is a generic equivalent of Hy-Tran". Probably better, 303 is equivalent of SAE 20, Hytran is equivalent of SAE 10. 30 weight engine oil may be better for that provided the tractor is not sharing implements with a tractor that uses hydraulic fluid. Not sure about the non detergent as we used detergent oil in my dad's H in the 50's -- heavy use, detergent worked fine.

You never read the owner's manual?

An H wouldn't be my choice to run a log spliter. Not enough pressure or volume. I wouldn't even use the larger M pump. The low pressure would necessitate the use of a 5" (even 6") cylinder which will make cycle times very slow.

You might want to consider running a higher volume modern pump off the PTO or belt pulley. Think about 20 GPM at 250 RPM for the PTO and the same volume at 500 RPM with the belt pulley. If you run belts and pulleys, you will have to do the math. There is no point in running the engine at full no load speed. There is plenty of torque and HP.

At 30 GPM, the log spliting task becomes a two man operation unless you have a foot-treadle operated valve.

Probably cover to cover, detergent and hytran were not sold when the tractor was built--1947. I currently have the latest version of the Super M manual, which covers both the belly pump and live hydraulics. It does not mention detergent vs non detergent for the belly pump, just to use premium quality engine oil. At some point in the 50's our dealer started selling detergent oil, nothing was made of that and at that time no one worried about foaming -- as I said it was not a problem for our H. If you have a manual about the belly pump that says not to use detergent, give me a quotation out of it and I will withdraw my statement.

I have been using a home made splitter powered by the hydraulics on my JD A--at about 1000psi-- for the last thirty-five years. I run a 4" cylinder and it works fine, maybe I get 3-4 pieces a year that I can't split. I split about 12-15 cords a year so not too bad. Bet the H will do as good.
