656 Hydro Reverse

Having problems getting my 656 Hydro to go in reverse. Forward works fine, both in low and high, but when I try to go in reverse nothing. This summer it worked fine, but the speed control lever got harder to move back and forth, now doesn't go in reverse. (actually I got it to move a bit today, but very slow, just creeping along, went forward for a little bit, then nothing again.) Thoughts?

Do you mean the lever will not go into reverse. Sounds like that. If that is the case the adjustment may have slipped on the control valve where lever clamps onto it. If the lever goes into reverse, but tractor doesn't move, that would be a different problem. Could be sticky shuttle valve in center section, sticky relief valve, capsule in drive control valve , check valve in center. Would need more information to trouble shoot.

Yes, the lever will go in reverse (not quite as smooth as it was this summer, but it does shift to the reverse position). And at different times I have gotten reverse to work very slowly, but not with the speed I had during the summer. The tractor was low on hydraulic fluid here in the fall, so I added a couple of gallons. What other information would you like?

OK, as long as it goes into reverse, and the linkage is actually pulling the rod up in transmission, the next thing is make sure lever is centering. It should be very close to equal distance movement in each side to side direction. You will note this moves the control valve in or out. If I could not see any reason for problem in the external linkages, the very next thing I would do is cap those two lines coming up from hydro trans housing. They are the two small quarter inch steel lines. Cap the fitting on transmisson. This will eleminate all external valves etc. You will not have control with the foot n inch pedal now so be care ful. Try that and then if it reverses ok you know problem is outside of trans. If it still does not move good in reverse problem is internal. Stuck relief valve, sticky shuttle valve, leaking steel line to relief valve, check valves etc.
