53 SH Sediment Bowl

I have a regular SH and Stage ll. The sediment bowl on the regular leaks gas out the carb line when the screw is turned in to stop. The Stage ll never has an issue . As far as i know they are both the original sediment bowls. Is there a repair I can try for this needle valve screw? is the seat brass or a soft surface. I have not removed the bowl assembly at this point.

If it is leaking around the shut-off screw, you might need only to tighten down the packing nut a little. If that doesn't do the trick, the packing inside might need replaced. A Case-IH dealer should have what you need.

If it was mine, I would simply buy a new sediment bowl assembly and be done.

Our local NAPA has a replacement bulb asembly for H, SH, etc. (it fits most letter series, but it is NOT the two fuel line type) for less than $20. I'd just change it our if you can't get the packing and/or the needle valve to seal/seat. They usually come out without too much difficulty, just unscrew the whole assembly (if I remember right, it takes a 13/16 open end wrench) from the tank, "goop" up the threads with the proper sealer and screw the new one into the tank. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

There is no separate "seat" in the sediment bulb assembly. Instead the needle seats directly into the native pot metal (zinc) casting. Either the zinc has deteriorated in the seat area (most likely) or the end of the needle is severely worn or has broken off.

Suggest removing the needle and checking the seat area. If it's pitted you might be able to renew by carefully grinding with a suitably shaped burr.

However the best fix is to replace the entire bulb assembly with new.
