Sealed beam modifications

I just found my stash of pancake headlight housings, which I've been looking for all summer and fall.

The bulbs are all bad.

Has anyone ever tried to grind the filament stem off the back of the bulb and fit another type of bulb?

I have, but the issue is that the silvering of the reflector goes bad. If it were hermetically sealed, it might be OK. If I were to do it I would use a diamond core drill to cut the hole, then put a LED based lamp in it and seal with a windshield adheasive. Jim

I have been using Halogen 1165 bulbs in mine. They are 50 watts and throw lots of light even more than the sealed beam lights. They plug right in but of course they are 12 volt. Not sure if they make a 6 volt version.

I just did this yesterday and today. I bought the sealed beam
tractor guide lights at napa, very carefully ground the glass tab off
the back of it then put the seals on and placed it in the original
housing. Its a tight fit but it worked.

Yes, you can get 6 volt halogen bulbs for just about anything. I got them for various old cars and the Farmall tractors. They work fine. Available on line from various places. I get them from South Australia or the U.K., but no doubt there are people in the U.S. who sell them too.
