Loose stick shift

This Cub's gearshift lever changes the gears; but, man is there lots of "slop" in the gear shift stick/rod/handle/whatever.

Cause? How to get rid of slop?

Thanks.

The pivot pin is probably very worn and can be rebuilt with pretty much ease. The tip (IIRC) is ball shaped, and needs to fit in the slots of the shift rails nice and tight. Jim

There's a thing on eBay i bought called Sloppy Shifter Fix, consists of a bar and a shaft that holds the shifter in place on H's, M's, etc., and might on Cubs also. Check it out. $25.
Like Janicholson said, the nub-end of the shifter might be worn, you can get it rewelded back to where it fits int he shifter rails properly. On H's they need to be 3/4" fore and aft, and about 0.43" thick. Cubs might be similar, you cuold check the shifter rails and see what it needs.

The Cub shifter is a different design than the larger Farmalls. There is no pivot pin.

There is a hemispherical cup that is part of the shift lever. If your shifter is really loose, the cup has probably broken loose from the lever. If so, you will need to either replace the lever or weld the cup (from the BOTTOM side). The details are here, along with some other possible problem areas:

Thanks for all comments and the link.

Removed the trans cover and looked at the lever inside from the bottom. Appears that's where the problem is.

Swapped it out with one on a parts Cub and now the "working-on" Cub has nice tight gearshift lever.
