Farmall M Engine Identification

I am looking at gas Farmall M. The engine has been replaced at some time. The engine has an oil dip stick on the block and petcocks on the oil pan. It also has a much bigger oil filter than what I am used to seeing on an M. everything else looks normal. Is this engine out of something other than another M? Is there a way to determine the specs of the engine by the serial number?

the larger filter would indicate a early C248. Look on the front right side of the engine right above the mag / dist should be a serial number there. You can also get the part number which is behind the oil filter area as well. The dip could have been added over the years, M&W etc.

Yes, the last three digits of the engine number should tell you:
X3A is for kerosene operation. I can't remember what the other suffixes mean and my Farmall M books are at the farm. I am sure someone here will know.

Most of the kero/distillate engines here in the
US, were not marked with the suffix if they were
set up to use those fuels. X1 will indicate high
compression gas, Also if you have a very very
early gas engine they were not marked with the X1.
head numbers etc will confirm what fuel it was set
up to use.

Ah, well that was unkind of them! Never mind. Something new to learn everyday. Here pretty much every Farmall M and W6 was X3A. I have never seen a Geelong assembled Farmall M which was not set up for kerosene.

If the dip stick just goes through a hole drilled in the block it is an aftermarket item added to the tractor. If the dip stick screws into a pipe sticking up out of the block and is marked one side for engine running and the other side engine off it most likely came out of a power unit, crawler or W series tractor.
