Factory SM Pictures?

Are there any detailed pictures available on 1953 SM's showing both side views of the tractor? I would really like to know exactly what was painted red...black...not painted at all. Thanks for all your help.

Pete

Pete, when I start thinking about a restoration on a tractor I find all the available factory printed literature available on that model. For a Super M there will be numerous sales and dealer product brochures, magazine ads, etc. available with tractors appearing as they leave the factory. There are several sources for finding this information which I'm sure you will find very useful for your needs, Hal.

The Guy Fey Book on Letter series Farmalls is accepted as authoritative. The tractor was painted red after being put together. The distributor cap and wires, the steering wheel, the amp gauge and fuse holder, and axles were covered. The radiator was originally black, and some over spray of red got on the sides and fins. Belts and hoses were just painted with no effort to mask them. Jim

The steering wheel, distributor cap, and spark plug wires were NOT painted. Likewise the rear axles were not painted, and probably the PTO shaft was not painted. Obviously the gauges were covered before painting, but everything else on the tractor did recieve a nice coat of red paint, including the starter and generator.

No black anywhere except for the steering wheel rim, distributer and spark plug wires, as stated. One thing not mentioned is the front and rear wheel rims-they were galvanized. Most people use some form of silver/gray paint. Some use aluminum paint which is too bright for me. I use PPG 8568 for the rims.

I can't tell you because I have never used it. However, if it is the same color as is used on the new CaseIH tractors, the silver argent is not the right one, but as there is no "right one" it is only my opinion. Mine is a GM rally wheel color, similar to those on the 80's and 90's GM pickups and other vehicles. There was more than one shade. I tried two of them and settled for 8568.

These are painted with rust-oleum hammered aluminum. (or silver) Not too shiny, but fairly close to galv.

Isn't that silver paint they sell the same stuff the modern rims are painted with?

Patrick, Great photo - Colors look very nice together. Are those "old style" tires from Miller Tire as they look really good on your tractor, Hal.

Thanks Hal, and yes those are from Miller tire. I'm trying to re-create an early 40's retro look with my M, and that's part of it. Yea those tires put a dent in my wallet. But I didn't mind. I'm just glad they're still available at whatever cost.
