surprise surprise

Trying to get a 22-36 back to running after it has set for at least 30 years. The head is at the shop being rebuilt so while waiting for that to be finished I decided to replace the rings. There was very little ridge in the sleeves but reamed them anyway. That when I got the surprise. The big end of the rods are too large to pass through the sleeves. The rings are all at the top of the piston and will raise high enough to all clear the tops of the sleeves.

That is the first engine I ever had apart that the big ends of the rods are too large to pass through the cylinder bore, its a 4 and 3/4 bore. This hobby is full of surprises. Joe

My W30 is like that and I wouldn't be surprised if all the IH tractors around that time frame were like that.

They all go out the bottom, thats why the bottom of the sleeve is tapered, so you can get them in without a ring compressor.I usually put them in without the rings and bring them out the top to put the rings on just because that seems easier to me. If you get an F-20 with 4 inch pistons in it , they will come out the top. Never messed with any F-12s or 14s though, they may be different.

I have a F14 and they come out the top. F12/14's were different is several ways from the other F series.

I guess since they are pressure lubed instead of splash they probably don't need as big of a rod bearing.

i had my minneapolis moline G-VI apart a few years ago and it is that way, you had to lift the jug/block assemblied off the crankcase and removr the piston/rod assemblies out the bottom
