1950 Farmall M Tire Size

I just bought a 1950 Farmall M and the rear tires
are quite checked. Before I start plowing, etc. I
would like to get a set of spares. The tire size
currently on the tractor are 14.9-38 and are about
5 feet tall. The used set I am looking to buy are
13.6-38 but are much shorter: about 4" 4". Since
the rim size is the same, they should fit on the
rims but I am concerned about the drop in height.
Won"t the back of the tire drop way down and then
the tractor won"t be level? Can you tell I"m a
beginner??

New tires are VERY expensive. If you can get a good buy on them, get them. Don't worry about being a little lower to the ground. Besides, sometimes those checked tires will last for years.

Are you sure they are 4ft4"? I would think that they would be closer to 5ft, 4".

Hey! Thanks for the speedy reply! So I am estimating on the heights of the tires but the 14.9-38's that are currently on the tractor come up to me about mid-cheek and the used ones (13.6-38's) hit me right about the armpit. Even if I bought the newer ones, I would keep the current tires on and use them until they blow. Just don't want to be in the position of needing new tires quickly. I can get these 13.6-38's with tubes and all for $600 for the pair. Does that sound good?

It sounds high to me, but wait until someone else chimes in with more experience. I haven't bought any tires for about 10 years now. They would have to be in very good shape before I'd pay that much for them.

14.9 are higher than 13.6, 15.5 would be same height as 13.6. I put 14.9 on my MH44, they look really nice.

That 13.6 would have been what it had new, they will give you more pull in same gear but will not travel as fast as the larger ones will. The way they were geared the 13.6 in third gear for same speed and load with the 14.9 you might have to drop down to second gear.

I got a awesome deal on brand new tires mounted on rims that are 13 6 38s they don't look to bad on my super mta diesel but will put bigger on it.

The tractor was designed for 12-38 (13.6 "new designation). 14.9's will reduce the power to the ground because the increased height increases ground speed. The rims are not necessarily the same. 13.6's are ok on an 11 or 12 inch wide rims. 13-38's (14.9 "new" designation) are designed for 12 or 13 inch rims. It would not surprise me at all if you are looking at 14.9's on an 11 inch rim, at most 12. Because most people think the wider tires look better and ignore the rim size. Narrow rims pinch the tire making the tread curved instead of nearly flat, thus less traction instead of more.

If you haven't checked on tire prices for that long you're going to be in for a rude awakening. That's about what 1 13.6 x 38 is going to cost new. If the used tires are 50% or better with no problems it would be a decent buy especially with the tubes included. Just my thoughts

Thanks for all the advise.I will check the rim width as you suggest. We would want the increased traction with the 13.6-38's because we are planning on plowing/discing, etc and will also be trying to pull out some scrub trees in the field. We don't care so much about speed.
I was also concerned that the 13.6's are so much shorter than the current 14.9's. Won't that result in lowering the back end of the tractor--the tractor body is now level with the ground but it seems like the shorter tires will have me at quite an angle. Am I missing something?
The 13.6-38's appear essentially brand new and the guy wants $600 for the pair including tubes. Does that sound like a reasonable deal?
Thanks for your advise!

It's a[u:a3b30a1c23] great[/u:a3b30a1c23] deal and the proper size for your tractor. Don't wait until someone else snaps them up.

No, the tractor should be level because it came with that size. Check your front tires, they should be 6:00-16 6 plys, someone may have put on front larger tires to level it. The rears on that size tractor should be 6 ply also. Does it have a wide front or a narrow front? The speed is important because the faster it goes the less it pulls.

The front tires are 6.5-16 SL F-2 (Armstrong Tru-Trac). It has a wide front.

I checked the rim width on the current 14.9-38's and they are 13" but the newer 13.6-38's will come with their own rims so I guess the current rim width doesn't matter--we'll just be able to switch out the whole business.

Thanks!

Wrong size...too big...no power...looks bad...Consider all future birthdays revoked! Seriously, I like the look of 14.9s.

OP - You just let me know when you want to get rid of those 13" rims. Where are they located?
