Why are some rear axles tapered and smooth and others have grooves in, like to hold U-bolts. They both have factory cabs. Could you order what axle you want.

I have not ever seen any axle with grooves on IH equipment for u-bolts, I did see a farmer want a new axle under warranty because they left a log chain wrapped around axle tightly & used it for obviously a long time until it broke.

The "smooth" axle housings first showed up on late production 86 series tractors. Nothing more than a progression in components and needs.

It was obvious by that time that the grooves in the housing were no longer needed for mounted corn pickers or fenders or loader brackets.
