Need help with C stuck in gear

I have just put my old C back together after having it apart to replace bad seals in the rear axle. Had the top off the tranny. Did my best to keep everything lined up when putting the top back on but I must say that is not an easy thing to do. Got it all buttoned up last night nice and tight. Had the gear shift in neutral but the tractor will not roll. Feels like it is locked maybe in two gears. My question is this. I truly would hate to have to take the whole dang thing apart [sigh]. Is this something I can fix by taking the shift lever out and work through the hole or do you think I need to take the whole dang thing back apart again? Any advice would be appreciated.
Thank you,
Paul Shuler.

Knock the stick shifter pin out and remove the shifter. Take a long screwdriver and align the shifting rails. Reinsert the shifter and it should be good to go. The tip of the shifter often wears away. You may have to build it up or replace it with another shifter that isn't worn.

Popping the shifter out is certainly a lot easier than taking it all apart, and at this point you've got nothing to lose by trying except a little time...

It'll tell you if you just have both shifters slipped into gear, or if you missed the sliding gears with the shift forks when you were lowering the deck back into place.

The alternative is to not fix it and end up a lawn ornament.

Lol, The lawn ornament did cross my mind. If I missed one of the forks Im guess it has to come off, am I right? Very hard to watch all of that while putting the deck back on.

If the rails were all lined up properly before you put the lid on, it is near certainty you missed getting one or more of the forks into the gears. If you bumped a fork hard enough to move it, the chances it still caught the gear properly has to be about zero.

If by chance you do have to remove the deck again I would suggest you make up a couple of guide pins. Get two pieces of rod about 8" long and thread one end. Screw them into the trans. housing diagonally to each other. Lowering the deck over the pins maintains alignment. If the shift rails and gears are in their neutral positions then it should go together with no problems. Sid.

Don"t know how you did yours, but on my IH tractor I used a pulley / come-along hitched up to rafters, and let the cover down easy, inch by inch, so I could get it all lined up. Much easier.

It was in neutral when the deck came off but I am guessing I bumped something. I used a motor hoist to lift it off and put it back on but it is not easy eyeballing everything as the deck gets with in a few inches of being on. Guess it needs to come off again. Rats.
