M oil pickup

How is the oil pickup attached on a M? I was draining the oil, and noticed it flowed funny. When I felt around in the drain hole, I was able to move the pickup around in the oil pan.

Drop the pan and have a look. While it is true the pickup is free to move up and down, it should not be able to move side to side. I also don't think you can reach that pickup by sticking your finger into the drain hole.

Once you get the pan off, you will see how the pickup is attached to the pump.

(quoted from post at 14:49:10 05/07/13) There is a good chance that what is moving around in the pan is a broken piston skirt.

Hadn't thought of that, but it is a definite possibility.

That was my first thought, but I've had it running a little a few times on LP. It sounds pretty good for the little time I can get it to run with a bad regulator, and carb. It had decent oil pressure, so it has to be picking up oil. It doesn't really move side to side but mybe 1/4 inch total, and springs back to the same position. I can feel the screen. I may pull the pan anyway, just because I don't really know a lot of history on it. The oil was pretty dark, but not really dirty.

If you look at how the right side of the oil pan bulges out in a section. That's where the oil pump body comes down from the block and part of the oil pickup ends up above the drain hole.
Cotter pin keeps the oil pickup tube in the pump body. Tube will rotate up and down in the body and also slide in and out just a little. Will also wiggle a little. Tube has stops for total drop and raise. Once in a while but not often the stops may get bent or damaged.
